Michael Jones is a freak, a superstar, a footballer in a million. He's a legend in his lifetime, for his amazing achievements on the rugby field and for his ability to fight back from a knee injury that would have terminated most other sportsmen's careers. He scored the first individual try in two World Cups and contributed massively to New Zealand's winning campaign in 1987, the year he burst on to the international scene. So highly did the New Zealand selectors regard him that he was taken to the second World Cup, even though he was unavailable for three matches which were scheduled on Sundays, a day he regards as sacred. Michael Jones is known to his All Black team mates as the Iceman, or Ice, for his cool precision in making match-winning decisions and the need for ice treatment of his body because of this intense commitment on the field. He is described by many of his famous predecessors and contemporaries as one of the great New Zealand All Blacks while one celebrated overseas critic labelled him the greatest rugby player he had seen in 40 years of watching the game.
