Fom 10,000 feed the giant Stirling began to circle the drome prior to landing. It quickly descended to 1000 feet, 800, 500 and at 300 feet straightened out to make the approach to the runway. At this juncture one of the four engines cut out. It is possible for a Stirling to land  with only three engines, but within a few seconds another engine stopped. The plane was already below stalling speed and it could not now stay in the air a minute longer. The nose dropped quickly and a terrifying dive began. George's eyes were glued to the instruments. As the plane hit the ground the speed registered 95 miles an hour. 

 

Fortunately, the landing wheels were down and the huge low pressure tyres broke the force of impact with the ground. The undercarriage was torn off and the plane careered madly ahead straight towards a big brick building. This building contained one front and one rear door. Without 'waiting to knock,' the plane and its startled occupants literally tore through the open door and made a similar exit through the back. This 'illegal entry' resulted in the bomber being stripped of it's wings, the tail plane and all the projecting pieves out of the fuselage, but still it careered onwards. (It takes more than withful thinking and a lot of fast praying to stop 22 tons of meatl travelling at 95 miles an hour!) Ahead lay a crashed crane with its wire ropes hanging down...
