This book is a first hand record of the contest between the Chinese Nationalist and the Chinese Communist undergroud during the fourteen year period ending in 1944, written by the man who was chief of the investigative department of the Kuomintang Central Headquarters during that time. The author gives the first published eyewitness account of the Communists' subversive tactics in China, their espionage activities and organizational procedures, and describes the strategems by which the government's agents hoodwinked and trapped their opponents. ~The grim, silent battle lasted for many years, sometimes one side gaining ground, sometimes the other. The author points out that the Communists' subversive operations proved a failure when the Communist Party was outlawed, and flourished and finally triumphed only when the Party was given legal right to exist. His story is a vivid and salutary reminder of the Communist formula for collaboration, subversion and conquest.
