Journalist Herries Beattie recorded southern Maori history for over 50 years.This is his most important work. For twelve months in 1920 he interviewed people from Foveaux Strait to North Canterbury,Nelson and Westland.He spent time recording southern names for artefacts and fauna and visited pa sites.
